READING & THINKING SKILLS
Reading and critical thinking are important and
often overlooked study skills. Studying is not all
about memorizing and remembering what you
learnt. It is equally important to understand and
analyze what you learn and be able to apply
that knowledge.

FOR
COMPREHENSION
Start by getting an
overview; scan
headings,
titles,
pictures, chapter
summaries. As you
read
each chapter
make notes
of key
concepts. Do not
highlight or mark the
text,
but take notes on
Paraphrase cards..
Re-read, taking fresh
notes without looking
at
the notes taken
during
first reading.
Compare
with first set
of cards;
often points
missed the
first time
are understood
the
second
time.
Collect all the note
cards and review
them. Combine and
rewrite new note cards
if appropriate. Review
and update keywords.
Your notes now are
reflection of your
understanding.
TO COLLABORATE
Divide the work in your
team so that each
member gathers
information and takes
notes, including library
work, field work, and
interview notes...
Share 'decks' of note
cards and use them at
the same time.
Continue
to add
information on
your
note cards and on
team member's notes.
Collect all the note
cards
and organize
them. Look
for 'gaps'
and complete
the
work. Use the same
notes for written paper
and oral presentation.
without spilling over to
the next line.
