Installation
What is the difference between the two different setup files that can be downloaded -the '.msi' file and the '.zip' file? Which is right for me?
They both install the same version of the program. The .msi file uses the Microsoft Windows installer, a program that is available on Windows 2000 and later operating systems. It may also be available in computers running older version of Windows if you have downloaded and installed programs from Microsoft. The .zip file contains a setup file that uses another installer, and is smaller of the two files.
The network administrators at many places of work, prefer to use .msi files as they fit into the way software is distributed and installed in their organization. Other organizations prohibit download of .zip or .exe files, but will allow .msi files, as such files contain information about the programs being installed that can be read without installing the program.
If you have a newer computer, the choice is your convenience. If you are running an older Windows operating system, it is possible that you do not have the Windows installer, and should probably use the .zip version. In any case, if you are downloading to install an updated version of ndxCards, please download and install using the same type of file you used previously. Also remember to backup your ndxCards data, as occasionally an install will overwrite your data and you may lose it.
Running ndxCards
Nothing happens when ndxCards is started via Start/Programs/ndxCards/ndxCards.
ndxCards is probably already running. Check the system tray for the ndxCards™ icon. Beginning with version 1.90 you will see a message to this effect, and the tray icon will flash.
Just right click on the icon to see the main menu, or double click to get a blank note card.
ndxCards stops with a message - "Security alert: Current user name-1 not same as owner of ndxCards™ repository name-2", and asks for a password.
The security feature is by design and is intended to limit access ndxCards™ to the person who installed it. The software compares the Windows login-id of the person who installed it with the login-id of the person who is using it. If this is your ndxCards™ data, just hit enter (to signify a blank password, as the software ships with a blank password) to continue.
If you want the ability for others who share the computer to share ndxCards™, get the main menu by right clicking on the icon in the tray, choose Properties and in the tab Shortcuts etc. and uncheck the box that says Enable Password Feature.
Note cards
How long can a note be? How much text can you store in a note card?
There is not a limit set by ndxCards™ on the length of a note. However, it is recommended that you write a note about one thought, idea, fact, piece of information etc. and associate it with specific keywords. This would make finding this information easy.
A very long note is likely to be about many (though related) ideas. Such a note would likely need to be associated with several keywords, some of which may be only pertain to a part of the note. Splitting this into many notes each with appropriate keywords is probably a better way to keep the data. The related notes can be brought together when needed, while they each can stand alone and be useful in other contexts.
How do I get to the text below the bottom edge of the note - there is no scrollbar.
See the previous question about long notes.
Click anywhere on the note to place the cursor. You can now use the up/down arrow keys, PgUp/PgDn keys or the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll text.
Beginning version 1.9, there will be a choice in the Properties menu to turn on the scrollbar in all the note cards opened after the setting changed.
